An Experience of a Lifetime...

In April 2004, I had the opportunity to participate in the Officials Development Program in conjunction with the Chicago Showcase representing the New England District. As a newer official, many questions and worries went through my mind, “How would I measure up against other female officials from around the country?” After all, this game had been a part of my life for most of my life, started playing at the age of 4 through high school, college and overseas, but this would be uncharted territory for me. All of my reservations and nerves were relieved the first day I was there and when I met all of the other officials, men and women, from around the country. The supervisors were absolutely incredible. They were so supportive and really created an environment for us to grow and learn while being challenged to step outside of our respective comfort zones. With 2 or 3 games a day and meetings each night, our days were very hill. It was an intense week and I grew so much, both personally and professionally. I believe that any game experience or opportunity to learn from other officials, both veterans and otherwise, is incredibly valuable. I highly recommend younger officials to consider this opportunity. However, you must be ready and be fit, be positive and be willing to learn both on and off the ice.

On my way home from Chicago, I was completely exhausted but my mind was racing and now I realized that 1 had a sense of responsibility to bring the knowledge and experience that I had gained back to my region. All of the nerves and anticipation of participating in the Showcase had been replaced by a sense of accomplishment and a feeling that I had become a member of a greater network of really wonderfully talented people from all different backgrounds and regions of the country. This event (not a tournament!) is a true testament to the objectives of USA Hockey and the Officials Development Program. It demonstrates the strength and presence of USA Hockey at many levels but especially with the team of people that made this opportunity available for newer officials like me. This was an experience of a lifetime.
